### Book Premise

Feeling bored and largely unnoticed by her parents, Coraline begins exploring the old manor house her family has just moved into. She soon discovers a small, mysterious door in one of the dusty rooms and becomes fixated on opening it. After finding the old key, she discovers a passage that leads her to an alternate version of her world—one where the food is delicious, the neighbors are more entertaining, and her parents far more attentive.

There is, however, one unsettling detail: everyone has buttons for eyes.

On the surface, this “Other World” is more warm and inviting than her own. But Coraline soon discovers that this world and their inhabitants are not what they appear to be. Her mysterious “Other Mother,” in particular, seems determined to convince Coraline to stay… *forever*.

## The Book

### Context

In 1987, Neil Gaiman and his young family moved into an old manor house in Littlemead, England, that had once been owned by the King’s physician. The idea for *Coraline* came shortly after their move-in; their five-year-old daughter, Holly, loved scary stories, and their creaky old manor house made for the perfect setting for one. His intention was to tell her a story that showed how you can be brave despite being gripped by fear.

Gaiman eventually put the project aside before moving to America. After receiving photographs of his previous flat from a friend in England, he resumed the project to finish it for his second, younger daughter, Maddy. Eventually, the book would be adapted into a major stop-motion animated film, bringing Gaiman’s story widespread popularity.

### Contents

Written for middle-grade readers (9+), *Coraline* is a short, straightforward novel consisting of 13 chapters accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations. However, its unsettling imagery and darker themes give older readers something to enjoy, too.

## "Should I Read This?"

### On one hand:

1. Even though the book is intended for a younger audience, the imagery and language will be a slight challenge for children who are not strong readers.
2. Readers who’ve seen the movie adaptation of *Coraline* won’t find a substantially different story in the book—a potential dealbreaker for those who weren’t particularly fans of the film.
3. The story reads like a dream which requires a strong mind’s eye to visualize the imagery and spatial layout.
4. Because the scenes can be tough to comprehend at times, additional illustrations would have helped readers better visualize this dreamscape.

### On the other hand:

1. The illustrations make the story fun, and help readers make sense of some of the more difficult-to-visualize scenes.
2. The atmosphere of the story is genuinely unsettling without relying on shock value and violence to accomplish this.
3. Gaiman reimagines familiar symbols and archetypes for a modern audience—the tunnel as a descent into darkness, the cat as a psychopomp (a guide between worlds), and the Other Mother as the devouring mother.
4. The book respects the intelligence and courage of children—Coraline remains strong and resourceful despite the terrifying predicament she finds herself in.
5. Though the intended audience are middle-grade readers, many adults would find the book a fun, quick, and compelling read—especially around the Halloween season!
6. The book is one of a kind. Imaginative and unique.

## Judgment

What makes *Coraline* particularly memorable is how it takes children seriously without talking down to its younger audience; the story acknowledges children who feel unseen, validates their fears, and recognizes their capacity to overcome them.

*Coraline* straddles a weird middle ground—challenging for some middle-grade readers and too simple for adults—but it's imaginative and unsettling atmosphere makes it enjoyable for most readers who enjoy a short, spooky story.

**Worthwhile For Adults Too**
